How to Rent a Billboard

· JUST LOOKING-Contact the advertising company that owns the billboard (usually posted on the skirt of the sign or a contact number on the billboard face). You can ask the billboard company a lot of questions on the phone, however I would recommend you giving them your email address and having them email you all the specifics about the location in question. Email is a great way to negotiate with billboard companies! Be careful though....high demand billboards need to be snatched up quick and there is not a whole lot of room for negotiation.

· WORK A DEAL-Determine your budget. Depending on size and location, expect to pay from $75 to $200 per month for rural sites, and from to $900 to $2,500 per month for city and interstate signs. If you're renting more than one billboard, negotiate a discount. The billboards on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood run $10,000 per month, whereas the monthly tab for the billboard in Paris, Texas, is $525 entering town and $375 on your way back out. You might get discounts for signing two-year contracts. Or maybe get 10% off your contract rate if a full year is paid in advance. Sign a three-year contract and get a vinyl and billboard install at no cost. There are plenty of ways to work a deal!

· GET BIDS-After you negotiate the price of your billboard...find competitive bids on your billboard vinyl. Billboard companies typically charge $2.00 a sq. ft. for your vinyl. Beware though...once a billboard company finds out that you will not be purchasing the vinyl from them, they might raise the price for a "billboard installation. Get all separate prices up front (Printing, Installation, Monthly rate, Removal Costs). After all your prices are concrete, then go search for competitive bids for your vinyl. Typically a business owner can purchase their own billboard vinyl according to the billboard companies vinyl specs and have it shipped directly to the billboard company. However...you will not be able find your own installers due to insurance purposes.

· DESIGN-Communicate your message in 7 words or less. If the billboard is near fast-moving traffic, the lettering should be at least 3 feet tall. Small billboards range from a 6'x12' and large billboards can be up to 20'x60'. Find a location that will best suite your needs. Most advertising companies will work with you on your objectives, budget, concept, design, execution and monitoring of traffic that passes by your ad.

Banner Sticking Together

Never allow the banner to have ink to ink contact with itself or any other type of print or paint. If the banner is able to touch ink to ink, it may stick and transfer or remove ink. Store banners in a cool, dry location.

Here is why: Temperature, pressure, rough handling, and gas chromatography (interaction of ink to ink during the curing process) can cause the surface to stick to itself (most common in High Rez prints).

Save your vinyl and save some money by taking time and folding your vinyl back up the right way.

This is an example of when you fold a vinyl back ink to ink.

Eco Flexx vs. Vinyl Flex

There are many who question the benefits of using Eco Flexx Vinyl verses regular than 13oz Vinyl Flex. There are positives and negatives using both.

While Eco Flexx is recycled old billboard vinyls, light weight and it beneficial for the environment, they just don't hold up as well as vinyl flex. They are really meant for short campaigns and tends to wear a lot easier. If you talk to a printer that is trying to sell you Eco Flexx, they will tell you the opposite. However....I have installers that have installed Eco Flexx on many billboards and they will tell you, "Eco Flexx is not as durable but is wonderful to install because it is super light." I reccommend Eco Flex for your 6 month campaigns.

13oz vinyl flex is your standard billboard vinyl. Alot of printers are trying to push this new 10oz or 8oz vinyl, but don't buy into it. Stay with the 13oz......it is thicker, heavier, and very durable. However.....it is a pain in the butt to install on a billboard because of it weight.

Normally, you pay one set price to have an installer install your billboard. The installer does not charge based on how much your vinyl weighs. He charges on how big your billboard is. Get more bang for your buck and buy 13oz vinyl that will last years rather than light weight that will last you 6 months.

Billboards Etc. Inc. recently printed some fun 50th birthday party decorations. We thought we would share some pics our client sent us. We printed small banners to hang and self adhesive vinyl to stick on the concrete. We even designed a printed their invitations.
